I remember those halcyon days. On April 19, 2007 when after heartfelt prayer, study, discussion, and observing the leading of the Lord, Amazing Facts and 3ABN were going to unite. In fact, I watched the whole special live coverage on 3ABN, but not too long afterward, the engagement was off. Another 3ABN separation. Alas 3ABN, always a bridesmaid, never a bride. . .
But news breaks.
Not that Bonnie Dwyer is prophetic or anything, but on July 12, 2007, she wrote Top Ten Amazing Facts about the Proposed Amazing Facts-3ABN Merger . Her number two amazing fact? "The more likely merger is Amazing Facts with Weimar Institute. That merger is on track to strengthen Amazing Facts College of Evangelism, Church Empowerment, and Health Programs, rather than broadcasting."
Now on April 9, 2008, the official word is: "After two years of heartfelt prayer, study, discussion, and observing the leading of the Lord, Amazing Facts and Weimar Insitute (sic) voted on April 6, 2008 to proceed with a bold new joint venture. Their respective boards approved an agreement whereby the operations of Weimar Institute will be administered by Amazing Facts with a new board of directors providing direction to both ministries."
And just so that you have it right for the Sabbath potluck banter, "it is not being called a merger or a take-over, but rather, a combining or just simply joining of forces."
Just so that we're clear. Bonnie is not a prophet, just a messenger of the law(d).

The alignment of Weimar Institute with Amazing Facts, philosophically speaking, is more like a marriage that complements both entities--a good word is synergy. For various legal reasons, each entity will retain its corporate board with the same members on each board. Weimar Institute now has five of its former board members on the reconstituted Amazing Facts Ministries board. The synergy is a win-win for each member of the marriage. The unique Weimar experience, combining education and health, is united with the AFACTS experience of public proclamation and thus a more full-bore presentation of the uniqueness of the Adventist appeal.

So, does this mean both partners in this “‘Equal Marriage” keep their original names or will they be hyphenated, i.e.: Weimar-Amazing Facts? It will be interesting to see how well the retention of original corporate boards works over time. I can see a lot of wisdom in doing it. I believe it helps to promote and maintain a healthy respect for each other and each other’s programs.
Neat question but the names will not be hyphenated. If we wanted a flow chart, I suppose under the rubric, Amazing Facts Ministies, Weimar Institute would be one of those "ministries." The separation of the two boards with the same members is often done in the corporate world for legal reasons. In the larger picture, the "marriage" enlarges and makes more precise another public face of Adventism.
