Adventist Caricaturist Captures Essence of Adventism

Saying what must be said about Revelation Seminars...

Just when you thought that it was safe to come out again, the Adventist Caricaturist returns with another satirical take on Adventism. This time it is a pithy summary of the whole of Adventism.

You can find more Adventist cartoon fun at the Caricaturist's website. If you're feeling lucky.

I didn't laugh :/

I did :)

Tough crowd, tough crowd...

Well, I guess I'll have to quit my day job. Once I get a day job, I'll quit it.

But hey, just wait til you see my Ellen-in-a-box! That I haven't made yet. That sounds less like a good idea the more I think about it.
Meh.

I'm going back to cartoons of Cliff Goldstein. He sent me an email you know. Said he thought I was funny but biased.

OK. That's all.

It's a great caricature of 50s Adventism, so far as that version of the faith persists among the Revelation Seminar crowd.

It's also a wake-up-call. How did we ever fall into such a trap of superficiality?

Two things that might help us:

1) Re-learning the story of the (real) pioneers--not the 20s-50s stuffed shirts. (That was mean...sorry.)

2) Digging into the Bible. But that's a tall order in an age of cynicism, supermarket checkout stands and instant Internet access. (I'm in in my old fart, handwringing mode here...But God will rescue me, I'll re-embrace the Promises, and start peddling hope again, unfashionable as that may be.)

Wouldn't "digging into the Bible" enhance our language, our thoughts and words? Then would we make cartoons of sacred themes in a casual and supercilious fashion?

It probably goes without saying that in my depictions of Adventism, I exaggerate reality to point out how exaggerated reality can be at times.

I obviously don't believe that this is an accurate portrayal of the best of Adventism, or even that it depicts reality necessarily (that's why it's a cartoon, after all).

But I do hope to portray the way that Adventism has distorted itself...a wakeup call through oddly-shaped 2D Adventists.

I suggest sticking with the personalities. Neal Wilson,
F. D. Nichols, and other pompous souls.

Yes a story. My dad was the builder for the Illinois Conference for about 10 years. He and Mother had an apartment in Brookfield, Ill. "Brother Nichols" was a scheduled speaker at Broadview, Academy. He was staying at the Hinsdlae San. My dad was assigned the job of picking Elder Nochols up and taking him to Broadview. Dad had to come home from work. Shower, shave, dress, drive to Hinsdale in evening traffic and pick up Elder Nichols and get him to the church on time! One evening, As dad pulled up to the curb at the Hinsdale San. Elder Nichols grabbed the door, opened it, and said, "your late". Dad replied: "Your watch is fast". End of conversation. In a week of meetings Elder Nichols never thanks dad for going out of his way to carry Elder Nichols to and from his appointment of self-righteous propaganda. As you know Elder Nichols died suddenly and unexpectedly although he lead a "clarn E.G. White life". The report was he died of a tear in his heart valve--no real heart disease was found.

My dad died a few years later of honest to goodness heart disease. I hope to see them both in the kingdom. I plan to greet dad first. I also hope Nichols watch is set on the right time --wouldn't want to miss any part of the final program. Tom

Good point - Adventism is too big a beast to try to tame with my little pen. Better to take pot shots at those individuals who are easier to bag. After all, David only took down one giant, not the whole Philistine army, right?
