A Discussion of Knight's Neuturing Adventism

Here's a twenty-eight minute discussion of George Knight's new book, The Apocalyptic Vision and the Neutering of Adventism.

Knight argues:

The Seventh-day Adventist Church was founded upon an apocalyptic message that needed to be preached to the entire world--immediately and at any cost. But does the church today preach that same message with the same urgency? Has the Adventist Church become irrelevant because it has sought to be more relevant to the world? Does the Adventist Church have any reason for existence if it has lost that which makes it different from all the rest of Christianity?

And if in fact Adventism has neutered itself, is there anything we can do--as individuals and as a denomination--to remedy this shocking condition in which we find ourselves?

Knight challenges us to go back to our roots, to examine the prophecies that fueled the early Seventh-day Adventists' determination to evangelize the world. Buried within the books of Daniel and Revelation are the only reasons for this end-time church to exist. But beware: you may have to uproot yourself from the pew in order to be truly Adventist.

The Spectrum Podcast participants are:

Lisa Clark Diller, Associate Professor of History at Southern Adventist University

Kumar Dixit, Associate Pastor of New Hope Church in Fulton, Maryland.

Trudy Morgan-Cole, a writer and teacher in Newfoundland, Canada

Julius Nam, Associate Professor of Religion, Loma Linda University

Adventism in Light of Obama

In this (finally edited) Spectrum Podcast, three young guys discuss what some of Barack Obama's approaches to change might mean for Adventism.

This conversation was recorded right after the Inauguration, but due to your humble editor's day job it finally was edited and posted - a month later. But this time provides an interesting opportunity to judge us: in light of the recent news - do we win the Ellen White award for prognostication?

Here we discuss divides in Adventism that surround ethnicity and generations, and we reflect on the prayers at the Inauguration and discuss the hip hop artist Kanye West, television shows Lost and 24 and the Christian novel, The Shack.

Trevan starts us off with some memories from attending the Inauguration and Zane jumps in with some real world skepticism toward unity talk, particularly in Adventism.

Zane Yi is a doctoral student in philosophy at Fordham University, New York.

Trevan Osborn pastors the Far West End Seventh-day Adventist Church, Virginia.

Alexander Carpenter teaches at Pacific Union College, California.

Re: Church Podcast

Recently, Ryan Bell, Lisa Diller, Kumar Dixit and Julius Nam started doing some experimental podcasts surrounding contemporary issues and Adventism. In this 18 min. conversation, hosted by Lisa they focus on the question:

"What are the challenges faced by local Adventist churches when it comes to retaining and attracting young people?"

Along the way, they talked about:

"What does it mean for a church to be healthy?"

"What role does a pastor have in

"Can one have a vibrant religious life apart from commitment to a local congregation?"

 * Ryan Bell, Pastor of Hollywood Seventh-day Adventist Church in Los Angeles, and author of Intersections blog.
* Lisa Clark Diller, Associate Professor of History at Southern Adventist University
* Kumar Dixit, Associate Pastor of New Hope Church in Fulton, Maryland, and author of Wondering About God blog.
* and Julius Nam, Associate Professor of Religion, Loma Linda University

This was originally aired on Progressive Adventism.

Emerging Adventist Walking Points | Ray Dabrowski

Today we're talking with Ray Dabrowski, Director of Communication for the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists. Ray has pioneered two major innovations in church communication, namely the Adventist News Network and the Global Internet Evangelism Forum. ANN provides reported stories of Adventists engaged with contemporary issues and the Global Internet Evangelism Network (GIEN) brings together church leaders and Adventism's technologists.

We discuss the emerging ways that Adventists are walking the talk of the church.

Rajmund Dabrowski comes from Poland. Following his studies in religion and journalism at Newbold College in England, and at Andrews University in the United States, he held positions of editor-in-chief and manager of the Church’s publishing house, as well as Communication Director, in Poland.

In 1985 he was elected as Communication, Public Affairs & Religious Liberty Director of the Trans-European Division, headquartered in St. Albans, England, and became Communication Director for the World Church in 1994.

Dabrowski is also a photographer and has authored numerous articles and books. As part of his responsibilities at the General Conference of the Church in Silver Spring, Maryland, he is also Director of the Adventist News Network, and has coordinated a process to establish the church’s global corporate identity (logo).

He is married to Grazyna Dabrowska and they have an adult son, Michal.

The Adventist Middle Ground on Religious Liberty | James Standish

James Standish discusses the policy behind the Workplace Religious Freedom Act. Click here to tell your members of Congress that you support it.

James Standish was born in Australia, grew up in South-east Asia where his parents were missionaries, went to college in England, and now calls America home. James has represented the Seventh-day Adventist Church to the U.S. Congress, White House and executive agencies since 2001. He earned his Juris Doctor, cum laude, from Georgetown University where he was president of the Georgetown University Church-State Law Forum and an editor of the Georgetown Journal of Poverty Law & Policy. He earned his MBA at the Darden Graduate School of Business at the University of Virginia where he was news editor of the Darden News. He earned his bachelors degree at Newbold College, England, where he was first editor of the college newspaper and then served as president of the student association. James hosts television’s Global Faith & Freedom, has authored a number of articles on church-state issues, and is a regular guest on radio. James is married to Dr. Leisa Standish.

This is a two part episode. In the second half - which I'll post in a couple of days - James Standish talks about the innovation of getting Adventists to lobby Congress and how NARLA threads the needle between the ACLU, Americans United, and the ACLJ.

http://religiousliberty.info/

Quotes from James Standish:

"We only have two problems on Capitol Hill - elements on the right who want the church to control the state, and elements on the left who want the state to control the church."

"We are either changing the world, or the world is changing us."

"All law should be moral, but not all morality should be law."
